(PRINCETON, NJ February 2, 2015) – Through the lead efforts of Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ), the New Jersey Congressional Delegation issued a letter on January 22, 2015 to CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner expressing their concern over an announced change to the time limit that hospitals can access critical Medicare claims and eligibility data from CMS systems.
In its R2014Q300 Release Summary dated September 2014, CMS expressed its intention to limit hospitals’ access to Medicare claims and eligibility data by requiring hospitals to utilize the HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System (or “HETS”). When implemented by CMS, HETS will restrict access to Medicare claims and eligibility data to a period of only twelve months from the date of service.
This is a significant departure from the current system (the Common Working File) through which hospitals can access Medicare claims and eligibility data for up to four years from the date of service. This length of access is necessary to ensure that hospital claims are paid accurately by Medicare and to allow hospitals to correct claims during the time period permitted under current law. The New Jersey Congressional Delegation is urging CMS to permit hospitals access to this critical Medicare data for three years from the date of service for all claims.
BESLER Consulting and the New Jersey Hospital Association reached out late last year to the Members of the New Jersey Congressional Delegation for their support and assistance in addressing this matter directly with CMS.
“We would like to thank Representatives Pascrell and Smith and all the Members of the New Jersey Congressional Delegation for their bipartisan support in this matter,” stated Jonathan Besler, BESLER’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We ask concerned leaders at affected hospitals to forward this information to their respective state hospital associations to build awareness of this important issue.”
